Ayurvedic medicine (also called Ayurveda) is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It originated in India and has evolved there over thousands of years.  Ayurveda is a holistic system of medical science and is the oldest healing science which is almost 5000 years old. Ayurveda contains two Sanskrit words: “Ayu” which means life or lifespan and “Veda” meaning knowledge. Thus, Ayurveda means “the science of life.” Ayurveda and ayurvedic treatments deserve a better position in the world where Ayurvedic treatments are considered to be one of the oldest methods of treatment in the world. 1.Uzhichil

2.Pizhichil

The meaning of the word Pizhichil is squeezing and the procedure involves squeezing of the warm and heated oil from a cloth. However, the first step in Pizhichil usually starts with applying oil on the head and body of the person receiving the massage. Then a cloth is placed or tied over the forehead so that the oil poured on the head does not enter the eyes. The oil that is used in Pizhichil can be varied ranging from sesame oil to ghee to other types of thailams which are made by combining various herbal oils. The type of Ayurvedic oil used on a person depends on his or her medical conditions and requirements.



Pizhichil Ayurveda treatment in Kerala is known for its  beautiful combination of two classical Ayurvedic treatments, Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation). The whole body is bathed in streams of lukewarm medicated oil with simultaneous soft massage.



3.Shirodhara


Shirodhara is a purifying and rejuvenating therapy designed to eliminate toxins and mental exhaustion as well as relieve stress and any ill effects. It is also helpful for patients after a stroke. This therapy helps enhance the functions of the central nervous system as a whole.




Shirodhara is an earliest Ayurvedic medicinal technique that literally translated into Shiras referring to ‘the head’ and dhara means continuous flow in Sanskrit. This Ayurvedic therapy involves a stream of oil dipping over your head steadily to bring about an immense feeling of relaxation, calmness and stillness of the mind.


 

4.Nasyam




Nasyam is the instillation of herbal medicines through the nostrils. It removes mucus, clogs, cleans and clears the head channels, and also simulates the brain cells and central nervous system. It is commonly used to treat diseases like paralysis, Parkinson’s disease, and complex headache, and acute sinusitis, diseases of the head, neck and nose.
